There’s something magical about waking up to the smell of warm pastry and sweet cherries drifting through the kitchen. For me, a homemade Cherry Danish Recipe brings back slow Sunday mornings, coffee brewing in the background, and flour dusted across the counter while everyone waits impatiently for that first flaky bite.

Growing up, pastries like this felt special — something you’d find in a cozy neighborhood bakery, displayed behind glass and wrapped carefully in paper. But once I discovered how surprisingly simple an easy cherry danish can be at home, it quickly became part of our weekend rotation.

What I love most about this recipe is how it transforms basic ingredients into something that feels indulgent and celebratory. Whether you’re making it for dinner dessert, a brunch spread, or even for holidays, this sweet, flaky pastry never fails to impress.

And the best part? You don’t need professional pastry skills. This version uses simple techniques and approachable ingredients so you can enjoy bakery-quality results without stress.

INGREDIENT NOTES & DETAILS

Use high-quality frozen puff pastry, thawed according to package directions. Look for all-butter versions for the best flavor and flakiness.

Cherry Pie Filling

Canned cherry pie filling works perfectly and keeps this recipe simple. If you prefer homemade, use fresh or frozen cherries cooked with sugar and cornstarch until thickened.

Cream Cheese

Full-fat cream cheese gives the richest, creamiest texture. Let it soften fully for smooth mixing.

Granulated Sugar

Adds sweetness to the cream cheese filling. You can reduce slightly if your cherry filling is very sweet.

Vanilla Extract

Enhances the creamy base and rounds out the flavor.

Egg

Used for the egg wash to create that beautiful golden finish.

Powdered Sugar (Optional Glaze)

Mixed with a splash of milk to drizzle on top after baking for that classic bakery look.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling

In a bowl, beat softened cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla until smooth and creamy. The texture should be light and spreadable without lumps.

Step 3: Roll and Cut the Puff Pastry

Lightly flour your surface and roll the puff pastry slightly to even it out. Cut into squares (about 4 inches each).

Step 4: Create the Borders

Score a smaller square inside each pastry piece without cutting all the way through. This helps the edges puff beautifully.

Step 5: Add the Filling

Spread about 1 tablespoon of cream cheese mixture inside the center square. Top with 1–2 spoonfuls of cherry filling.

Step 6: Egg Wash

Brush the outer edges with beaten egg. This ensures a glossy, golden crust.

Step 7: Bake Until Golden

Bake for 15–18 minutes or until puffed and deeply golden. The pastry should feel crisp and lightly firm.

Step 8: Cool and Glaze

Let cool slightly before drizzling with powdered sugar glaze. Serve warm or at room temperature
