CLASSIC PATTY MELT RECIPE

There are certain meals that instantly transport you back to simpler times, and this Classic Patty Melt Recipe is one of them. For me, it brings back memories of late evenings when the kitchen light was the only one on in the house, and someone would always suggest “just one more sandwich.” The sizzle of beef hitting a hot skillet, the slow melt of cheese over toasted bread, and that unmistakable smell of caramelizing onions would fill the room. It wasn’t fancy, but it felt like everything good about comfort food wrapped into one warm, satisfying bite.

remember learning how to make a patty melt standing on a stool next to my mom, carefully buttering slices of bread while she stirred onions that seemed to take forever to turn golden and sweet. It was one of those meals we’d make for dinner when everyone was tired but still wanted something that felt like a treat. Even now, when life gets busy, I come back to this easy classic patty melt recipebecause it never fails to bring that same cozy feeling back into my kitchen.

This recipe has become my go-to for weeknights, lazy weekends, and even casual get-togethers. It’s hearty enough to satisfy, simple enough to make without stress, and special enough that people always ask for the recipe. Whether you’re cooking for your family or just treating yourself, this patty melt has a way of making an ordinary evening feel just a little more comforting.

Form the patties
Divide ground beef into equal portions and gently shape into thin oval patties to match your bread slices. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder.

Cook the beef
In the same skillet over medium heat, cook the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate.

Assemble the sandwiches
Butter one side of each bread slice. Place butter-side down in the skillet. Layer Swiss cheese, cooked patty, caramelized onions, and more cheese. Top with another slice of bread, butter-side up.

Grill to perfection
Cook over medium-low heat, pressing gently, until bread is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted—about 3–4 minutes per side.Rest and serve
Let the sandwiches rest for 1 minute, then slice and enjoy while warm and gooey.

Low-Point Classic Patty Melt

Serves: 4

Estimated WW Points per sandwich: 5–7 Points

(Depends on your exact bread and cheese brands. Use the WW app to scan for the most accurate count.)

Ingredients:

•  1 lb (450 g) 93% lean ground beef (or 96% lean – 0 Points)

•  1 large or 2 medium onions, thinly sliced

•  8 slices light/low-calorie bread (ideally 1 Point per slice, such as Sara Lee 45-calorie, Ahold Light Rye, or similar light rye/carb-smart bread)

•  4 slices Sargento Ultra Thin Swiss cheese (or any reduced-fat/light Swiss – usually 1 Point per slice)

•  Olive oil spray or I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter spray (0 Points)

•  ½ tsp salt

•  ½ tsp black pepper

•  ½ tsp garlic powder

•  1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

•  Optional: mustard or sugar-free ketchup (0 Points)

Instructions:

1.  Caramelize the onions (the secret to great flavor):
Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat and spray generously with cooking spray. Add the thinly sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for 8–12 minutes, stirring often, until soft and golden brown. Remove from the pan and set aside.

2.  Make the patties:
In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties (make them roughly the size of your bread slices, as they will shrink while cooking).

3.  Cook the patties:
Spray the same skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked (internal temperature 165°F / 74°C). Remove and set aside. Drain any excess liquid if needed.

4.  Assemble the sandwiches:
For each patty melt:

•  1 slice of bread

•  1 beef patty

•  A generous spoonful of caramelized onions

•  1 slice of ultra-thin Swiss cheese

•  Top with second slice of bread

5.  Grill the sandwiches:
Wipe the skillet clean and spray again with cooking spray. Place the assembled sandwiches in the pan. Cook over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing down gently with a spatula (or another pan on top), until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted.

Serve hot! Optional: Add a little mustard inside for extra flavor without points.

Tips to Keep Points Even Lower:

•  Choose bread with 45 calories or less per slice (many light rye or “1-point” breads exist).

•  Stick with Ultra Thin cheese slices – they melt well and stay low-point.

•  Use plenty of cooking spray instead of any real butter or oil.

•  If your plan still shows points for lean beef, double-check in the WW app (it’s 0 Points for most people on the updated plan).

This version tastes like the classic diner patty melt but with way fewer points. The caramelized onions and melted Swiss make it super satisfying.

Enjoy your meal! 🍔
